Different Ways To Revive Dead or Dry Batteries

Batteries are a collection of one or more cells whose chemical reactions create a flow of electrons in a circuit. All batteries are made up of three basic components: an anode ( ‘-’), a cathode (the ‘+’), and some kind of electrolyte (a substance that chemically reacts with the anode and cathode).
Batteries that must be thrown away after use are known as primary batteries while batteries that can be recharged are called secondary batteries .
Batteries can be found in cars, motorcycle, generators,computers,solar power backup systems,tractors to name a few.

Laptop batteries are expensive pieces of equipment, so if you have an old laptop that still works fine, who wants to shell out upwards of $90 to replace the battery right!? Luckily, there are a lot of ways, some technical, some interesting and some strange ones, that people have come up with to restore dying batteries on laptops.

Determine if this method is right for you.

This method will work for any type of laptop battery. Re-calibrating the battery fixes issues where the battery meter on your laptop no longer appears accurate. It also does a complete discharge and recharge, which can add extra life to your battery.

Remove your NiMH or NiCD battery.

With the computer turned off, gently remove the battery from the laptop. The battery should come out without having to use much force.

Place the battery in a sealed plastic bag

Any high-quality sealable bag will work. It’s important to make sure the bag is completely sealed and contains no holes.

Put the bagged battery in the freezer for about 12 hours.

Don’t leave the battery in there much longer than that, as freezing it for too long could cause it to explode.

Remove the bag from the freezer.

Take the battery out of the bag and let it warm up to room temperature, drying it occasionally with a towel if it appears damp. Let the battery warm back up to room temperature for up to 30 minutes before continuing.

Put the battery back into the laptop.

If there is a cover that goes over your laptop battery, slide it securely into place as well.

Connect the laptop to a power source.

Without turning the computer back on, plug the machine back in to a power source and leave it this way overnight (or for several hours during the day).

Drain the battery.

To drain the battery quickly, it’s best to turn the computer on, unplug it from the power source, and do something system-intensive, such as watching a video with the screen brightness turned up.

Charge and drain your battery again.

Do this step at least twice, but preferably 4-5 times. Once you’ve followed these steps, your formerly-dead battery should now hold a charge for a least a half hour, hopefully more.


Over time, a rechargeable battery will lose its capacity to hold a charge and will no longer work. This happens because of overcharging, allowing it to get too hot or too cold, and for many more reasons. You may think that since it cannot be charged, you should just recycle it and buy a new battery. Instead, follow these four steps to revive your battery with a small dose of high amplitude and low voltage hits.

Checking Battery Levels

First, check the equipment that recharges your battery to ensure that it is not the cause of the battery’s issue. If your equipment checks out then you will need to use a multimeter to check the charge of the battery itself. In most cases the reading will show that the voltage is much lower than what it says on the screen. If you have a spare battery of the same make, you can use this as a measure to know how much power the dead one should have after you have revived it.

Check Equipment Levels

Test out your welder on the multimeter to make sure the DC power is running and also to check whether the gun is positive or negative. Sometimes welder can have AC with a backwards polarity, so you’ll need to turn the knob on your welder until your multimeter tells you that you are making around thirty volts.

Zap Battery

However, using this technique on your battery also will have some consequences. The material you vaporized has now permeated the separator of the material which forms a resistor that can short the plates. The cell also cannot be shorted and will have a poor charge retainer. This technique should mostly be used in cases where you simply cannot buy replacements for the immediate future.


The most common form of a lead acid battery is used in cars and trucks. Golf carts and electric cars and the like also use lead acid batteries . Essentially, every lead acid battery works the same way. They are also prone to the same type of degradation of the inner battery plates called sulphation . A sulfated battery is the most common malady of a dead battery, but as long as an used lead acid battery is mechanically sound, a sulfated battery can be revived. Identify the bad cells

Charge your batteries beforehand for at least 12 hours. After that, disconnect batteries from chargers and allow them to rest for 10 minutes.

Open up all battery caps.

Wipe and clean your mobile phone

After long term use, the metal surface of the

Place the battery in the ice compartment of your fridge, and take it out after 3 days.

Step 3:
Remove the wrapping and place the battery in cool location away from direct sunlight for 2 days.

Step 4:
Insert the battery into your phone but don’t power on your device. Instead, plug the phone into the proper charger and allow the device to charge for 48 hours.
After the device has charged for 48-hours, turn the device on and check the battery power level. If successful, this method will have revived your previously dead battery allowing it to hold a charge again.

Try jump starting the battery

This method is generally effective for mobile phone batteries that have either reached their lifespan limit or have been left discharged for a long period of time; they eventually lose their ability to hold a charge. In fact, this can also occur to a phone battery during long distance shipping, due to the travel time from one country to another. But now you can learn how to resolve the issue yourself.
Before doing this, you will need the following:

  • 9V battery, for its easy-to-access termina
  • A length of split wire to connect to the battery
  • Electrical tape to secure the wire
  • The battery itself

Step 1:
The positive and negative terminals on the 9V battery will be clearly marked. Identify them and connect the corresponding side of your wire to each terminal, being sure to cover the connection with electrical tape for safety.

Step 2:
On your cell phone battery, the positive and negative terminals will also be marked. Connect the wire to these as well, remembering again to secure with electrical tape. Warning: Don’t connect a positive side to a negative side.

Step 3:
Leave the batteries connected for between 10 to 60 seconds, or just long enough for your cell phone battery to get warm. Monitor the temperature and time closely.

Step 4:
As soon as the battery becomes warm, disconnect the batteries immediately. DO NOT try to fully charge your cell phone battery this way. Place the battery into your phone. You may need to charge the battery the rest of the way as normal, then try to power on the phone.

A small bulb may help

Fully discharge the ageing battery and recharge it to activate it. By doing this kind of deep discharging, the aim is to prime the battery for deeper recharging by fully draining out internal energy first.
You will need 2 pieces of wires here and connect it to the positive and negative pole of your phone battery.
Following this, connect your phone to a 1.5V small bulb.
Any residual power contained in the battery will be transferred to the bulb until it has been fully exhausted.
Note: the bulb light will gradually grow dimmer until there is no light emitted. This method is not the most effective, but it works to some extent.


Actually, the best method is daily care
You should adhere to the standard charging procedures and times as close as possible, it’s better to do this during the initial 3 times, and ideally from the first time. When it shows the low battery warning, try your best to charge it immediately.
Finally, avoid charging your phone overnight, even if it’s a habit, due to the impact that unstable charging voltage can have on your phone’s battery.
